Jodi Lee celebrates the comfort they find in picturing a calm ocean scene.

Waves

My mind churns louder than any sea

Away from the weight of eyes that judge,

that measure and assess,

Away from the ticking clock of time passing me by,

Away from the room of four walls slowly creeping in on me,

Away from the narrow hallways of ought and must,

the day to day that corridor my days to breathlessness.

I seek shelter and solace

in some unnamed coast.

Its sandy shores untouched

Except by me, of course.

Where the sand is silk

beneath my restless, aching feet.

Where nobody knows my name.

Granting me

such peace, and

such bliss.

The glimmering Aegean

does nothing to torment me,

and the Sun shines freely here,

demanding nothing of me.

Sitting on the edge

where the sand meets the sea

listening to the waves

crashing up against each other,

very much like old friends

catching up on one another.

then comes the ebbing,

the retreating of the waves

into the endless sea of blue

that so seamlessly swallows

everything unkind.

I feel the noise within me

attempt to do the same,

trying so desperately,

drowning out the hustle

and the bustle.

I am then washed ashore,

enervated!

but not abandoned.

My choosing of the tide

made the world of difference.

I have washed myself here

just resting, not wrecked.

Miles away

from people, expectations of society

and pain derived

from the wrongs of others,

the prison built

behind my eyes.

But here lies the twist of my relief:

none of this is reality-

‘tis but a fiction of my own making.

Every wave was conjured

The brightness of the sun

This beach of hope was stitched

from my longing and pipe dreams.

The caged torment

and fragments of my mind

Weaved together this paradise,

A happiness I could (somewhat) hold on to.

And so, I let it crash.

Let it ebb and let it flow.

The sea I’ve built will keep me

For every time I need it,

it will never cease to comfort.

I never once was lost.

I just simply learned to haul the tide

back in with me.
