Sports Editor Sarah Margerison discusses the recent success of TCBC’S women, especially at the recent Women’s Eights Head of the River Race.

TCBC’s women triumph at WEHORR

On Saturday 14th March, Trevelyan College Boat Club’s (TCBC) women’s 8+ travelled to London for the annual Women’s Eights Head of the River Race (WEHORR). Taking to the Tideway, the women of TCBC triumphed and took the title of the fastest Durham college, beating rivals Collingwood.

WEHORR is a prestigious race and the most important one of the head season for the crew. The race is held on the Tideway of the River Thames and spans 6.8km. Hundreds and hundreds of crews enter, and it is a gruelling race which speaks to the dedication and skill of all who enter.

Training for WEHORR began long before the race date. Countless erg sessions, water sessions and other head races allowed the women’s 8+ to train and develop as a crew together. The week before WEHORR, the crew attended Derwentwater Head Race in the Lake District in preparation, winning the fastest women’s crew and setting a new course record. The crew trained extremely hard in the lead-up to WEHORR and their result is a testament to their hard work and devotion to the sport of rowing.

Collingwood Boat Club have long dominated college rowing. However, in recent years TCBC have rapidly risen through the ranks and begun to regularly challenge them. WEHORR marked the culmination of this challenge. The women’s 8+ beat Collingwood by 7 seconds on the Tideway and took the title of fastest Durham college, a result very well deserved.

WEHORR marked the last race under women’s captains Jess Eddy and Imogen French. The result is a testament to their leadership, guidance and dedication to the women’s squad. The two have given so much to the club and the women’s squad this year, and their commitment to women’s sports and making sure they are seen and heard is admirable.

HEX would also like to extend our congratulations to the whole crew for their incredible performance: Josie Zissler, Zara Mason, Carys Crowther, Isla Shiner, Tati Tresidder, Imogen French, Shona Bennison, Jess Eddy and Julia Lawrence.

The women’s squad and 8+ will now turn their attention to the regatta season next term, and we look forward to watching their continued success.
