From climbing to debating, mixed netball to art – meet the latest of Trevelyan College JCR’s societies.

Meet the six new societies ratified this year

One of the beauties of collegiate lifestyle is that if you are passionate about something, you have the opportunity, via the JCR, to set up a society dedicated to it. This is particularly true of this year, as six new societies have been ratified, offering Trevs students the chance to participate in a variety of activities, from sport to debating to appreciation of local beverages.

So, as the summer term picks up in momentum, and you find yourself with time on your hands post exams, then why not find out a little bit about each newly ratified society?

TREVS CLIMBING SOCIETY

Firstly, to the newly founded Trevs Climbing Society. The Climbing Society seeks to provide Trevs students with the opportunity to climb in a friendly environment on Saturdays at Durham Climbing Centre, no matter your previous experience level. Please reach out to Tamara Leach, the president of the society, if this sounds like something you would be interested in.

HEX

HEX has also been brought back this year by our esteemed Editor-in-Chief, Elliot, and has thrived thus far, making a real difference in JCR elections and providing a variety of new insights into the college, many of which you will find in this edition. HEX’s annual AGM will take place on 7 May, and I encourage everyone to attend if you’re interested, and also anyone to get involved with writing articles via the contributors Facebook page, as it is really enjoyable.

DEBATING SOCIETY

The Debating Society has also been set up over the last year, and provides Trevs students with the chance to participate in regular debates both within and outside college. This society was the brainchild of Andrew Hamilton, so please get in touch with him if you’d like to know more!

ART SOCIETY

Art Society has also been resurrected, and has held and plans to hold a variety of events to encourage participation in art within the college, as well as attending events held by other colleges, such as participating in studio time at Grey College. Feel free to reach out to Stephanie Watt, the President of the society, if you’d like to get involved, or check out @trevsartsoc on Instagram.

MIXED NETBALL CLUB

To the world of Sport now, and the Mixed Netball Club. Set up by Bethany Meek, Mixed Netball competes in the Mixed Netball intercollegiate league, and is a really good opportunity for those who haven’t played before to get involved, especially if you’re quite a lanky bloke. Practices happen most Wednesdays on the Tennis Court on the Back Lawn!

WANDERING ALE TAP SOCIETY

Finally, to the incredibly named Wandering Ale Tap Society. This society, spearheaded by the previous and current Bar Sabs, George and Sam, was set up for those who have an appreciate of local ales, and would enjoy wandering around Durham sampling some of these beverages. Somewhat unsurprisingly, you can find Sam and George in the bar if you want to get involved!
