Let’s Get Our Knickers in a Twist: Bringing back confidence and tackling underwear poverty

When you think about essential donations for those in need, items like food, coats and shoes come to mind. But there is another basic necessity that rarely makes it to donation drives: underwear. It’s an item that many of us take for granted, yet for women facing financial hardships, homelessness or even war zones, access to clean, comfortable underwear is not always guaranteed.

That’s where Let’s Get Our Knickers in a Twist comes in. A Female-led non-profit organisation providing Knickers to women in need. By raising awareness and organising donation drives, this campaign aims to provide dignity, hygiene and confidence to women who need it most.

Why Knickers?

Underwear is deeply personal, and unlike jackets or t-shirts, it’s not something that can be donated secondhand. Many women shelters struggle financially and have to go without, prioritising food and rent over new items of clothing. The consequences extend beyond discomfort – lack of clean underwear can contribute to poor hygiene, infections and a loss of dignity.

Despite this, underwear is one of the least donated but most needed item in charities and shelters. Campaigns like Let’s get Our Knickers in a Twist aim to change this, ensuring that no woman has to go without something so fundamental.

It’s about recognising that dignity isn’t a luxury, it’s a fundamental right

To see this campaign in action, I attended a #PinkPantsParty, an event designed to raise awareness and encourage donations in a fun and engaging way. This event was wholesome and fun, where girls supported girls and came together for a great cause. It was inspiring to witness how a fun event could spark conversations about dignity, empowerment and confidence. It became clear just how much this campaign goes beyond just donating underwear. It’s about recognising that dignity isn’t a luxury; it’s a fundamental right. When women have access to basic necessities, they are better able to focus on education, work, and social engagement without the stress or shame of going without.

A Small Action, A Big Impact

A simple donation of new underwear can make a world of difference. It’s not just about clothing, it’s about dignity, confidence, and well-being. Let’s Get Our Knickers in a Twist is a small but powerful way for women to support women in their own communities.

So, next time you’re picking up essentials, consider grabbing an extra pack of knickers. It might just be the most meaningful purchase you make.
