Trevelyan College is home to around 40 societies by the latest counts, ranging from the long-standing Boat Club and Men’s Football, to the 5 (or possibly even more by the time this article goes live!) societies that have been ratified since the start of this academic year. Below is a look at a few of the societies on offer.
Fashion Show
Trevelyan College Fashion Show returned to the scene last summer following a brief spell of inactivity to host the Fashion Show in the Dining Hall here in Trevs. This was a raging success, generating just shy of £3,500 pounds for local charity, Heel and Toe. This year the fashion show is planning on returning to Trevs in June, even better than last year, but very much building on the success of last year. President Niamh Coyle tells HEX that “the theme is ‘after hours’ and I wanted to use this to reflect and sort of continue on from last year”, going on to talk about how the event will gradually ramp up with each walk.

Chamber Choir

For a college known for its impressive display of musical prowess, it felt necessary to mention one of our amazing musical societies, and to me there was no better choice than Chamber Choir. A staple in Trevs Music for many years, they are often outshined by some of the other musical societies on offer in college, such as the Manglers. They perform at the end of term concerts each term as well as other events such as last year at the Trevelyan and Castle joint concert, or annually at the Christmas Formal.
“It’s a difficult job for [us] to select members after auditions at the start of the year.”
– Trevelyan College Chamber Choir President, James Tozer
Chamber Choir is a fully auditioned ensemble, which means that each year, the president and Musical Director of the society have to go through and listen to loads of auditions before even the first rehearsal, to put together the choir. While this leads to the highest quality ensemble possible, it does lead to the unfortunate part of rejecting some potential members of the society. President James Tozer tells HEX, “It’s important for us to put together a well-balanced choir which makes it really hard when we have to turn people down! We’re really pleased to have had such a good pool of applicants this year and we’re proud to have put together such a cohesive and talented small group.”

Debating Society
One of the newest societies to Trevelyan College is our Debating Society. Founded in Michaelmas, it has so far held two events, debating a range of topics from demolishing Dunelm House through to discussing Donald Trump’s presidency. Despite not being present at Freshers’ Fair, they have managed an attendance of 10-15 at both events, although their president, Andrew Hamilton wishes for more, describing this as “not well attended”.
“Future plans are to start holding socials as well as doing intercollegiate debates with other college debating societies.”
Andrew Hamilton
I can’t wait to see the Debating Society expand into being one of the staples of the non-musical/sporting societies here at Trevelyan College. It is very impressive to have membership around 30 for a freshly established society.

Games Society

A society that means a lot to me personally is Trevelyan College Games Society. I joined it on a whim in Freshers Week, having loved the games night held during that week, and very quickly got elected in as the society’s Vice President, or Knight as it is known to society members. Having now served as the Co-President (or Games-master) for around a year jointly with Ollie Laws, it has been amazing to see the society grow from a small handful of people playing games once a week when we joined, all the way to multiple sessions a week of 20 people alongside a thriving D&D scene and many a special event. Despite this amazing popularity increase over the last two years, it is still sometimes seen as a society for the nerds and left to the side-lines in favour of the much more popular sports societies.

Women’s Football

More than half of the societies in Trevs are sporting in nature, ranging from conventional competitive sports such as Rugby, Hockey and Rowing through to the more obscure Futsal or Ultimate Frisbee. Whole articles could be written (by someone far more knowledgeable than myself) about some of these incredibly successful teams, but I did want to talk about one here, the Women’s Football team. They are joint with South College, and have had an incredible season of ups and downs ranging from their 8-0 defeat against John Snow and being knocked out of Floodlit in the first round, to their recent 11-0 victory against Hild-Bede.
“This year, our main challenge has been rebuilding as a team, as we lost quite a few integral members who graduated last year.”
Women’s Football Captain, Niamh Coyle

There are so many incredibly talented societies here in Trevs, it was so hard to pick out only a handful for this article, especially trying to not just write about any of the many societies I have been involved with in the 2½ years I’ve been in Trevs so far.
