Trevs’ very own jazz band, The Manglers, are set to fundraise for Macmillan Cancer Support at their annual charity gig on Saturday 8th March. Macmillan is one of the largest charities in the UK, providing specialist healthcare to cancer patients and information and support for those affected by cancer, including family and friends.

HEX spoke to the President of The Manglers, Oli Matthews, who stated about Macmillan: “It’s just an amazing charity, and they are really eager to support us, and we’re eager to support them. It’s not just about raising money. It’s about raising awareness of Macmillan and of people with and affected by cancer, and Macmillan’s services.”

‘It’s just an amazing charity, and they are really eager to support us, and we’re eager to support them.’

Oli Matthews, President

Last year’s gig managed to raise in the region of £300 for The Brain Tumour Charity. This year the target is set at £500. Macmillan have already demonstrated their support of The Manglers, sending decorations to be put up in the bar on the night of the gig.

The Macmillan Cancer Support Annual Overview 2023 estimates Macmillan’s services reached 2.3 million people in the UK affected by cancer in 2023. In the same year, Macmillan’s specialist nurses, support workers, and palliative care nurses helped approximately 730,000 people living with cancer, from diagnosis to treatment or end-of-life care.

Moreover, 110,000 people were supported via the Macmillan support line, 59,000 people received a support assessment via Macmillan’s electronic holistic needs assessment, and Macmillan staff helped secure £310 million in benefits to combat the financial precarity that a cancer diagnosis can cause. Crucially, 9000 patients were able to access BUPA counselling to help them face the emotional impact of living with cancer. This is just a short overview of the support Macmillan provides, which is wide-ranging and far-reaching.

Alongside the JustGiving, The Manglers are running a charity raffle in the bar on the night of the gig. Prizes have been donated by Durham food spots, including Zaps, who donated a £25 voucher, Cafedral, Rudy’s, and Nando’s, amongst other prizes. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase on the night.

“It’s an amazing night; grab a few drinks, listen to The Manglers and get involved with the raffle,” Oli said. “The bar will be nicely decorated. It will be a great night with a big Trevs family. The Trevs music community will be there.”

‘It will be a great night with a big Trevs family.’

A great night of music in Trevs awaits and for an even greater cause. Come to The Manglers’ charity gig on Saturday 8th March in Trevs bar, starting at 8pm. Bring friends, family, flatmates, housemates, teammates, and coursemates and get behind The Manglers in aid of Macmillan.
