HEX talks to Trevs Badminton, who’ve only lost one match out of every game they’ve played this season.

Club Spotlight: Trevs Badminton

Trevs Badminton are “at the top of the league”, says the co-President of the society, Luke Taylor. With the women’s and mixed team at the top of the highest intercollegiate leagues, and the men’s at the top of the second league, the club are “so proud” of their achievements this year.

“We’ve played either 17 or 18 matches this season across the three teams and only lost one,” Luke told HEX. The men’s team have a guaranteed promotion to the Premier Division of intercollegiate badminton, whilst the women’s and mixed are playing their last matches in the hopes of winning their leagues this term.

Luke praised the women’s team in particular, for their team camaraderie and success.

“We’ve got, compared to some societies, such a good group of Freshers because we do our sessions in Trevs as well as our team ones outside of Trevs,” Luke said, “It’s really nice that we have this social core that’s completely separate from our teams and our competitive side.”

As co-President, Luke’s focus has been on being able to push the competitive side without compromising the social side of the club. Social sessions run on Wednesdays and Sundays every week, which are open for everyone to attend. These take place in the James Knott Hall, in Trevelyan College, from 16:00 until 18:00.

The team are hoping to have a second mixed team next year, and potentially a second men’s and women’s team also, because of the high engagement in the society.

“It’s one of those things that people have never tried before,” Luke said, “so we had around 30-40 scan our QR code at the [Trevs] Freshers’ Fair.”

The first sessions of the year filled the JKH, and the success of the social sessions on Wednesdays and Sundays have proved that the game does not have to be about winning. It is this social success that Luke hopes to make the club even more successful next year.
